Metallic Zipper Pouches: Getting Creative with Oly*Fun

Thursday, 30 March 2017 1:00

Shine on! These adorable little zippered pouches are made with Oly*Fun™ Metallic and good ol’ felt. Oly*Fun™ is a flexible, synthetic material from Fairfield that doesn’t tear or fade. You can sew it, glue it, staple it, pin it or tie it. And because it doesn’t fray, there’s no need for hemming. We layered it with felt, which can also maintain a cut edge without raveling, to create an easy zippered pouch. It’s just the right size to hold a few necessities when you’re out, or drop it inside a larger tote to keep small things tidy.

Canvas Slim Bag with Elbow Patch Corners

Wednesday, 29 March 2017 1:00

Ahhhh, the classic leather elbow patch... it can transform a rumpled guy in a tacky corduroy jacket into that suave and sophisticated history teacher you had a mega-crush on sophomore year. But... what else can it do? It can become a unique accent for a slim style bag. We cut one leather elbow patch in half to fashion corner accents, then put a denim style patch through a die-cut machine to create a set of interesting iron-on embellishments. The Dritz Home Speedy Stitcher tool is what's used for the heavy-duty stitching on both the corner patches and the bag's handle.

How to Use The Speedy Stitcher Sewing Awl Kit

Tuesday, 28 March 2017 1:00

We are big on bags here at Sew4Home, which means we're always on the lookout for cool bag accessories; such as closures, handles, hardware, and more. One look we love is the addition of leather and faux leather handles (both pre-drilled and un-drilled), as well as medallions and patches. But, we hadn't pinpointed the right tool to make securing these add-ons easy enough for all levels of sewers. Thanks to our friends at Dritz®, we have our solution: The Speedy Stitcher® from Dritz Home, a sewing awl kit that makes attaching these kind of cool items, as well as many other tasks, fast and easy.

Kitties-To-Go Handbag: Featuring Tula Pink’s Tabby Road from FreeSpirit Fabrics

Monday, 27 March 2017 12:00

We first spied Tula Pink’s Tabby Road collection way back in October when it debuted at Fall Quilt Market in the FreeSpirit Fabrics booth, and we’ve been patiently (well kind of anxiously actually) waiting for it to be readily available through online and in-store outlets. It’s here, and has already been flying off the shelves. So, snap some up soon to make our brand new Kitties-To-Go Handbag. It’s the purrrrfect design to flaunt your feline love.

What Would You Like? Enter Our You Asked 4 It Survey!

The more we know about our audience, the better we can tailor our projects, product reviews, and technique tutorials. We have just a few short multiple-choice questions, which should take you about five minutes to complete. We promise there will be no math story problems or trick questions about who exactly is buried in Grant’s tomb. If you include your email at the completion of the survey, you'll be entered in a drawing to win a mystery grab bag of cool fabric cuts direct from the S4H Stash. It's an easy way to let us know what you would be the most interested in seeing right here on Sew4Home.

Travel Tote with Handy Wraparound Pockets

Thursday, 23 March 2017 1:00

When you're on the road, doesn't it always seems to be the ordinary, everyday things you are suddenly in desperate need of: gum, nail clippers, your headphones? I get a little panicky, certain I've left behind the most obvious items... as if perhaps I'm on an arctic expedition and won't see civilization for weeks. But the opportunity for replenishment doesn't matter; I want my stuff close at hand. That's the theory behind our handsome travel tote: plenty o' pockets to stash all your stuff. There are four big outside pockets that wrap front and back plus a deep inside compartment (exactly deep enough for a magazine, I might add!) with its own generous interior pocket. I'm still likely to forget something, which is why after my current travels, I now own five pairs of sunglasses and eight tubes of lip balm.

Top Color Trends for Spring 2017

Wednesday, 22 March 2017 1:00

Even though a crazy last blast o’ winter just covered much of the northeastern US in a blanket of white, Spring officially arrived this past Monday, and with it comes COLOR! It’s time to shake off the winter blues (and blacks and grays) and bust out some brights. The color gurus at Pantone have forecast their top ten seasonal picks, which break into five colors on the softer side of Spring, and five more vivid tones that can segue right into summer. Read on to plan your next palette.

Strawberry Fields Forever Lattice Pillow

Tuesday, 21 March 2017 1:00

This clever pillow looks complex with its intricate lattice front and peek-a-boo inset, but it is so easy! We love the splash of color behind the lattice strips, and had fun imagining this same design in a number of wonderful fabric combinations. It would be beautiful in silk and brocade as a wedding pillow. Or try it in fun and funky brights and polka dots for a kid's room. Our instructions are for a 16" square, but you could easily adapt the sizing smaller or larger.

Copper & Cotton Adjustable Apron: Dritz Hardware in New Copper Finish

Monday, 20 March 2017 1:00

In 2014, a team of Belgian scientists analyzed why humans are attracted to shiny objects. They theorized it is rooted in our desire not necessarily for the object itself, but because it reminds us of our need for water. Well, alright then – this stunning apron with its copper accents is making us very thirsty! Although not as shimmering as a polished brass or nickel, the new Copper finish available in popular Dritz® hardware is a metallic to fall in love with. We’ve paired it with a metallic linen blend fabric in a matching copper, then finished the design with a natural canvas and cotton webbing alongside a gorgeous printed cotton accent for the skirt. Go ahead and grab a glass of water, then read on for all the instructions.

Mini Charm Square Patchwork Placemats

Friday, 17 March 2017 1:00

As they say, sometimes the best things come in small packages. We love the itty-bitty adorableness of Mini Charm Squares. At just 2½” x 2½”, they are beautiful bite-size pieces that can be pieced together into colorful combinations. We used them to create double borders on a set of placemats. Each placemat uses 40 of the standard 42 squares that traditionally come in a Mini Charm Square pack, so there’s hardly any waste. And since they’re all cut from the same collection, it’s easy to mix and match. We used a Mini Charm Square bundle from the new Lulu Lane collection by Corey Yoder for Moda.
