Handsewn ornaments passed down from my family have always been my favorite thing to pull out each year to decorate the tree! I look forward to creating them with our children and passing them along when they are grown.

It's small and so simple, but a beautiful and delicate cotton apron with a few pleats and decorative stitches that my grandmother stitched by hand for me when I was 3 years old is my most cherished sewn heirloom.

With my first granddaughter due in 9 days, I am planning to make a quilt square or block from every dress or outfit I make her...sure to become her very own heirloom. Thanks for the inspiration from all of the beautiful fabrics you feature!

I have lots of quilts quilted by my Grandma (hand quilted). I treasure each one and would use the fabric collection to make my grandchildren a quilt from me.

I am making a ruffled tablecloth today for our big family thanksgiving dinner and would LOVE to do another one with the heirloom collection for Christmas. These two months are my favorite of the entire year. I hope to pass down my home-sewn collections to my own children (with one on the way, I'm starting early!).

My favorite fabric heirloom is actually 2 quilts that were made for me by each of my grandmas. One I use every night as I watch TV and the other is on my bed. They are both very special to me as they were made by special ladies and they are really the only thing I have from my grandmas.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this collection! How exciting an opportunity! One of my 'fabric' traditions is new jammies for my kiddos (who are all now adults, and have kiddos of their own). I STILL get my 'big' kiddos new jammies, and now all 10 of my grandchildren...they all open on Christmas Eve, and have new jammies for the morning! My kids love it, and now my grandbabies! Would love to make some new jammy pants from some of these prints! How fun! Thanks for the opportunity!

I have a yo-yo quilt that my grandmother made in the 1930's. I absolutely love it and love looking at the different fabrics she used... not purchased for the coverlet but left-overs from her scrap bag... My mother passed it on to me and I will pass it on to my daughter. I have other more recent quilts, made by my sister, that I will also pass on to my daughter, now 25, when she starts her family. And, packed away, I have dresser scarves my mother and grandmother made in the 40's early 50's... I love that connection to these very special women...

Being born and raised in New Orleans, my family is very diverse. My great grandmother (who also christened me) made a handsewn quilt with a feather pillow to match and the stitches are perfect and right on!. The stitches were all different shapes and sizes, different threads, each piece of fabric told a story about our family!. TEARY EYED right nowsmilies/smiley.gif..SHe even included a small pic of me as a baby sitting right in the middle which was transferred to fabric, like a piece of sackcloth, beats me! But, it is still in wonderful condition, I only dry clean it and when not in use, I vacuum seal it, the pillow is feather down and the pic of me is on one side and the quilt fabric pieces on the back. I still wonder how she did that as my mom has no idea! Simpy Beautiful with lots of deep colors (non-Bleed)

I have a wonderful heirloom blanket that my mom made for me when I was a baby over 30 years ago. It is detailed with my birth info on one side and Holly Hobbie fabric on the other. My 4 year old daughter uses it and loves it to this day. smilies/smiley.gif
I also have a quilt for our queen bed that she also crafted by hand. She has crafted a quilt for all her 9 married children. It is something we ALL cherish, knowing and appreciating all the hours she has put into each quilt. This will be passed onto the next generation, also.

Wow, what an awesome giveaway!

I wish I had some handmade family heirlooms, but unfortunately don't. I hope one day something I sew (or knit or crochet) for my family will be passed down as a heirloom.

Thanks for the giveaway! smilies/grin.gif

My brothers had these beautiful handmade stockings from childhood. As of now only one survived. It was made from red velvet with jingle bells on the foot portion, gold trim sewn on the top. And all down the stocking were itty bity embellished felt shapes that were things like trees, ornaments, santas and reindeer. They were all hand-beaded and sequined. So pretty. I have a new granddaughter and it is my wish to make her an heirloom stocking that lasts as long as this one did (it's 54 years old). And just as special.

Seven years ago, I used leftover scraps from when my sister made her wedding gown (I didn't have any scraps left from my own gown) and made my daughter a Christening gown. We are in the process of adopting and I secretly hope we get a girl so I can use the gown again. If we get a boy, I suppose I'll just hand down the gown for future grandchildren. terri1138 at embarqmail dot com

My family heirloom is a necklace that was passed down from my great-great grandmother. It goes to the oldest daughter in each family and it is given to you on your wedding day. My mother is the oldest and so she passed it on me and I cannot wait until the day my daughter gets married so that I can pass it on her.

A quilt top was found while cleaning my mother-in-law's condo, as she was moving into assisted living. Many of her belongings were disbursed among family members, since I was labeled the "crafty one" I received the quilt top. When I phoned my mother-in-law to find out it's history she became VERY upset, feeling that everyone had stolen from her. I asked if I could finish the quilt and send it back to her. She cried and apologized to me. The quilt top had been a wedding gift from her first marriage. Her husband died leaving her with two small children to raise. She later remarried and had four more children, including my husband. I did as I had promised, I completed the quilt...including embroidering her name onto the backing for security purposes. As her health deteriorated, I received the quilt back. The memories this quilt holds are priceless and will be passed on to my children.

Both of my grandmothers were talented. One grandmother crocheted and I have many table toppers, placemats, etc., that I love to use during the holidays. The other grandmother was born and raised in Norway and as a child into young adult, she prepared her hope chest. She gave each of us a piece of her work and mine is a white embroidered on white linen cutwork tea cloth (another name for small table topper) and I cherish it so much. She also made an afghan for each of us which still keeps me warm to this day. Thanks.

I don't have a real family heirloom, but I was given two pairs of crocheted baby booties for my little boy who's due in a month. A sweet older lady at church told me the story that goes with them: her mother-in-law made them, and after she passed away, her husband tried to sell all of them at the estate sale. Someone who knew what they were told my friend what was happening, and she said, "Buy them all and I'll repay you." Now she gives them at baby showers, and they are gorgeous and so well made, from years and years ago. Definitely heirloom quality!

Also, I'm planning to make a small baby blanket from leftover scraps of fabric I used in decorating our baby's nursery. Maybe that will be an heirloom!

My grandmother has always made everyone in our family a quilt for special life events. She's made us t-shirt quilts in college, baby quilts when we were young, and she even made my son a quilt from my grandfather's old plaid shirts. Now that I've learned to sew and am getting better at it, I would love to be able to make her a quilt to surprise her with. I even have a quilt that was made by my great grandmother, my son's great great grandmother!

The fabric heirloom that I cherish is a quilt handpieced and quilted by my great grandmother in the 1920s, right before she died in a car accident. Her daughter, my great aunt, passed it to my father (her nephew) because she knew he would take good care of it. From there, it came to me, her oldest grandniece. It is a beautiful split LeMoyne star made of 4 inch blocks, each with 24 tiny pieces. Gorgeous work. Thanks for the opportunity to enter this so can win some Heirloom and make my own heirloom quilt to pass along. alternate email mlwright29(at)hotmail(dot)com
P.S. My mother wants me to win too as she will be the co-quilter on this project.smilies/grin.gifsmilies/cheesy.gifsmilies/smiley.gif

Our fabric heirloom is a lace bonnet my mother wore home from the hospital when she was born. All the girls born after her (my aunt, sister, cousins, and niece) have worn it home. Last year was my daughters turn, but we had a freeze in our area and she had to wear a thicker cap. I instead used it in her newborn photos and the birth announcement. It was a beautiful variation on the original tradition and if I have girls in the future, I hope to do both traditions. Both wearing it home from the hospital and the newborn pictures.

One of the most cherished things I have is a large square doily made by my Great Aunt, it has the family name done in fillet crochet. It was given to my Dad just before she passed and he gave it to me when I got my first grownup apt. after graduating college.
I am new to quilting.... although I have sewn on and off for many yrs. I have made each of my children a quilt and I am now making a Bargello for my husband. Each will have something that is unique, one of a kind and made with love.

I made a table topper out of vintage hankies and gave it to my Mom. It has a hankie with her initial and little charms representing me, my daughter, and my grandaughter. It's the favorite of all the things I've ever made, and I'm thrilled that my Mom uses it on her dining room table. I hope that my daughter and grandaughter will enjoy it one day too.

Thank you all for a wonderful week of Thanksgiving fabric heaven!

In preperation for her marriange, my grandmother made a quilt with the state flowers embroidered in squares. It was assembled with solid squares and a picket fence border!! She called it her "honeymoon quilt" because her husband helped quilt it during the long winter evenings of their first year of marriagesmilies/wink.gif This quilt has been passed down and is still being used! The quilt was on display for a bit at the state historical society and is in a published book about quilts that creat connections with out past.

My favorite heirloom is something my best friend gave me from her great grandmother. I don't have anything handmade from my family and knowing how much I would love something special that's handed down she gave me a Tea Cozy made of silk and hand embroidery. It's amazing and I love it so very much. I'm thinking about taking it apart and making a memory piece for her, and her first grandbaby. I'm just not sure I have the heart to cut into it. Have a great weekend!
