How better cotton fabric is made
Luxury cotton makers, like Michael Miller begin by choosing their raw materials the way a chef chooses his ingredients. This means selecting from varieties like American Pima or Egyptian cotton (which has several subvarieties), then from these varieties, buying only the better quality fibers.
During initial processing, the shorter cotton fibers are combed out, leaving only the longer fibers, which produce finer thread. These longer threads can be woven at a higher thread count. This is the basis of that luxurious feel we love.
After the thread is woven into fabric, but before it's dyed, it will be gassed, specially prewashed, and mercerized (which allows the fabric to stay soft and loose when washed).
The dyeing process is where a lot of cheap cottons get that stiff, rough feel. Regular dyes simply 'paint' the outside of the cotton fibers, making them stiff. The darker the cheap dye, the stiffer the fabric. Luxury cottons are given their color with 'reactive dyes.' Instead of just coating the surface of the fiber, these dyes actually permeate through to the core. The result is color that is deeper, more vivid, and longer lasting. It also means the darker colors are just as soft as the lighter colors and even the whites.
The most luxurious cottons are the solid colors. Because the process of making cotton prints is a lot like printing wrapping paper (the fabric is run through a printing press), it can never match the softness and colorfastness of reactive dyeing.
Finally, after dyeing, luxury cotton is further treated by calendaring (a process using heated rollers) and Sanforization (a process that fixes the fabric so it resists shrinking). Now it can be cut to size and delivered to your local candy shop (sometimes called a fabric store).
We encourage you to give these great Cotton Couture solids from Michael Miller a try, because high end cottons don't just look wonderful. They wear longer, wash longer, and feel better. Once you've worked with them, you'll never go back to anything less.

Turq (Turquoise) is my favorite. But so hard to choose, there are so many great colors!
Luna is my favorite. Turq comes next. I find these colors so soothing and lovely.
Indigo looks wonderful. It is dark, but not quite black, and can really help ground a design or room. Lovely mix of colors in the collection.

The watermelon is my current favorite; I was interested to note that most of the other ones I was considering were mentioned by others in the comments! Great minds think alike :) This is a fabulous collection--thanks for introducing it to us!

All the colors are just fabulous. I'm a huge fan of beautiful color. Having to pick one is tough because they are all just so pretty. But, since I must, I would have to say my favorite is the Purple Cotton Coture. First purple is my favorite color but even more than that, I am attempting to do the Beginner's Quilt Along at the Quilt Gallery and the fabric I'm using has a gorgeous purple (the Violet Cotton Coture may actually match closer but hard to tell), Fuschia (another of my favorites) and gray along with a few other colors. I need some solids yet and this awesome giveaway would be so helpful since it's got all the colors I still need. It may actually be too late for this quilt along if I were to win but, I bought alot of these fabrics so I would still be used with this same fabric.

I browsed through the many gorgeous colors and my favorite is Apple. I like it because it is cheerful and modern and goes with a surprising number of other colors. Beautiful! I have never seen these fabrics but they look wonderful and I sure would like to try them!

The green tea is pretty!
I have to pick only one, not an easy task. They are all amazing! Anything in the purple family; however, LAVENDER reminds me of my childhood bedroom.
I browsed the colors about five times and could only narrow it down to about 89 colors that I loved! But I think I really liked Lipstick. The name just made me smile!

I love it all, but the combination of the Tangrine and Fuschia really caught my eye. I would never dare to put that together on my own!

It is definitely the shades of red/pink/and all the luscius colors in between. It is nature at its finest as well as the colors of fun, food, and family.
Lagoon is my pick! It look slike the color I am always needing but can never find! It is great that there are swatches on the color card....so nice to match with.
The Blue is the most enticing. Whether it is sky, water, or just because I love the color - the possibilities are endless.
