Rounding out our Clean & Tidy week are these easy-to-make basket liners. It's a great project to turn an otherwise ordinary wicker basket into a colorful organizer for just about anything. Sometimes, when my latest catalog arrives from Pottery Barn, Storables or Crate & Barrel, I imagine myself living in those pages with my life neatly tucked away into sleek stainless steel bins and buckets. Then I realize there's never anyone at home in those catalogs, so it would probably be pretty lonely. Instead, I'll make some of these cozy basket liners and invite some friends over for coffee.

I use my computer all day every day, but that doesn't mean I don't also have about two thousand pens and pencils. As a writer, I love to collect writing implements. I've stored them in everything from flower vases to tiny galvanized buckets, and of course, the requisite artwork-covered tin cans lovingly made by my children. For our French Desk Set series, we knew we needed a couple classier Pencil Cups. Ours are quilted and feature a leather accent tie and cute button. Classy? Yes. Easy to make? Double yes!

French Desk Set: Blotter

A desk blotter is a bit of a throw back when you consider most work areas these days have a computer or laptop front and center. But, our French Desk Set collection is very traditional, and so a classic blotter was a must. The surface is a custom-cut piece of non-glare glass, which makes a wonderful writing surface and allows you to see Moda's beautiful French General fabric underneath. We've incorporated gripper fabric into the design, and between that and the weight of the glass, it ain't goin' nowhere ... whether you're furiously scribbling a missive or penning an elegant thank you.

Did you have a diary as a kid? I did. I just wasn't ever very good at it: 'Dear Diary, School was boring today. When I got home, I ate crackers and watched TV. It was a good day.' Yep, pretty scintillating stuff. However, if I'd had something as lovely as this French General Journal in which to pen my deepest thoughts, I'm sure it would have been much better: 'Dearest Diary, Today was an educational minefield. When at last I made it back to the safety of hearth and home, I was able to relax with both sustenance and entertainment at the ready. Stupendous all around.' Try it for yourself. Turn a plain spiral notebook into your own inspiring journal with our step-by-step instructions.

After covering this plain mat with a scrap of the stunning French General Rounneries Oiseaux Bird Roche fabric used in our French Desk Set, we gave it a vintage feel with a few bits of trim and one cute flea market button. Including repainting the frame, this project took 30 minutes.

French Desk Set: Basket Liners

I adore being organized. Actually ... I adore dreaming about being organized. I pour over my catalogs from Pottery Barn, Storables and Crate & Barrel, picturing my life neatly tucked away into matching bins and buckets. I even drool over those circulars from Target that show up this time of year when all the plastic tubs are on sale. Surely if I could see everything at a glance, I'd get more done. In this alternate, tidy universe, my children also pick up all their clothes and no one leaves their dishes on the coffee table in the family room. To further inspire me to coordinate my world, and you yours, we've come up with five French Desk Set tutorials, using the gorgeous French General Rouenneries fabric from Moda. These easy-to-make liners are a great way to add color and pattern to otherwise ordinary wicker baskets.
