FreeSpirit-Rowan 10&10 Series: Unisex Urban Shoulder Bag in Tula Pink/Salt Water

Monday, 21 January 2013 1:00

To me, Tula Pink is the I Spy of the fabric world. I can stare at her design collections over and over, and every time I find something new: a sailing ship in a courtier's elegant hair style, bumblebees and swallows hiding amongst the berries, a seagull bobbing on the waves. We've loved every one of Tula's collections for FreeSpirit Fabrics, and the brand new Salt Water collection made us fall head over heels again. We were inspired to create a sleek urban shoulder bag. Über trendy with bold graphic motifs and solid accents, anyone would love this handsome, functional bag. There are generous pockets both front and back, an extra zippered pocket in the front for secure storage, an inset zippered closure at the top, and a divided pocket inside the lining. At a finished size of 15" wide x 10" high with a 2" base, it's large enough to fit a standard laptop as well as additional papers, pads and pens. The shoulder strap adjusts to fit any height.

FreeSpirit-Rowan 10&10 Series: Lush Fringed Pillows in Anna Maria Horner/Field Study

Friday, 18 January 2013 1:00

Today in our 10 Designers & 10 Collections series, we are taking a walk on the wild side with our good friend, Anna Maria Horner. We've created three incredible throw pillows in Anna's Field Study collection. Anna is always ahead of the curve when it comes to producing collections in a fun variety of substrates. Field Study is available now in quilting cotton, laminate, velveteen and voile, and will be coming soon in a linen. For our pillows, we chose amazing animal print velveteens paired with lush quilting cottons. Each pillow is framed with a gorgeous brush fringe. By using the same fringe on each along with one matching print (the animal print velveteen) in multiple colorways, all three pillows coordinate beautifully, yet all three are different.

FreeSpirit-Rowan 10&10 Series: Closet Hanger Safe in Tanya Whelan/Petal Sateen

Wednesday, 16 January 2013 1:00

Today in our 10 Designers & 10 Collections series, we step into the romantic world of Tanya Whelan and her Petal Sateen collection for FreeSpirit Fabrics with our now-you-see-it-now-you-don't Closet Hanger Safe. We originally designed this clever little storage solution for the frequent travelers out there. It's perfect to slip onto a hotel hanger, fill with your valuables, then cover up with a hanging garment. But it works equally well in your own closet. It's also a great way - when you're traveling or even just planning your daily work wardrobe - to collect all the accessories that go with a particular outfit. Put lingerie, jewelry, scarves and belts into the zippered and slip-in pockets, then hang up the outfit itself over the Safe. Everything you need for that's day outfit in one handy place! Even with double zippers, clever pockets, ribbon ties and more, the Hanger Safe is surprisingly easy to make.

FreeSpirit-Rowan 10&10 Series: Clasp Clutch in Joel Dewberry/Notting Hill

Monday, 14 January 2013 1:00

We all have our favorites: favorite colors, favorite TV shows, favorite foods. But you probably wouldn't go to a restaurant and always order the same dish, as much as you might love it. It's exciting to be adventurous, to look at something new, because variety is the spice of life. This is the underlying theme of a brand new series, starting today with our friends at FreeSpirit and Rowan Fabrics. We've selected 10 Designers and 10 Collections to create a dozen incredible projects, and we've included several how-to tutorials plus an awesome Great Giveaway. So get ready to mix it up for the new year, and make a resolution to try something new for yourself. We start with a bold clutch with a beautiful big ball clasp. Dress it up or dress it down. We made three, using six beautiful fabrics from Joel Dewberry's Notting Hill collection for FreeSpirit Fabrics

Kissing Booth eReader/Device Carrier with Pockets and Shoulder Strap

Thursday, 10 January 2013 1:00

I admit to being a die-hard book fan. I love the smell of books, the soft crack of a new spine being opened, the crisp turning of pages. I didn't think I'd ever fall for eReaders. But... I also didn't think I've ever learn to program my smart phone. So never say never! Now that we've accepted these cool eReaders into our world, we must give them a suitable carrying case! Today's final project in the new Kissing Booth collection by BasicGrey for Moda Fabrics is an eReader/Device carrier. We made our sample for a Barnes & Noble Nook®, but at a finished size of approximately 7" wide x 9½" high it will also easily fit a Kindle® or the new iPad Mini®. The device drops in through a zippered top opening, there are handy pockets front and back, and we added a cool detachable shoulder strap.

Kissing Booth Cuddly Lap Blanket with Fleece Backing

Wednesday, 09 January 2013 1:00

Here's a romantic Valentine's story: a pretty patchwork quilt meets an old softie fleece; they fall in love and become inseparable. That's the true tale of today's beautiful lap blanket. The front is a patchwork of Layer Cake squares from the Kissing Booth collection by BasicGrey for Moda Fabrics. The back is a cuddly fleece so there's no need for batting. The blanket is bound around the edges and also tied. But, it's not just a traditional tied knot... oh no! There are sixteen 2½" cornerstone squares across the middle of the quilt, and each square is tied through with a little yarn bow, creating the look of sixteen pretty gift boxes. Wrap up your Valentine in this warm and wonderful blanket.

Kissing Booth Gift Basket with Angled Handles

Tuesday, 08 January 2013 1:00

A basket of goodies is a wonderful Valentine's Day gift idea. And if the basket is as pretty as ours, you're giving a gift within a gift. Once the goodies are gone, the basket remains - ready to hold new items in the kitchen, bedroom or bath. We chose the Dozen Roses motif again (as we did for yesterday's apron) but went with the Candy Pink colorway, pairing it with the etched solid Grunge in Candy Pink for the lining and in Chocolate for the unique "V-point" handles. All these delicious fabrics are from the new Kissing Booth collection from BasicGrey for Moda Fabrics.

Kissing Booth Double Layer Half Apron with Pockets, Tucks & More

Monday, 07 January 2013 1:00

We're getting ready early for Valentine's Day with a series of four projects in the brand new Kissing Booth by BasicGrey for Moda Fabrics. We're big BasicGrey fans here at S4H, and so were anxious to work with their latest collection. The colors are traditional Valentine's favorites: plenty of reds, pinks, creams and browns, but we loved how the tones were richer and warmer than usual, and they sound so delicious: Cherry Cordial, Candy Pink, Crème Brûlée and Chocolate. The motifs have a softly vintage feel, as if you've discovered a treasure box of love letters tucked inside an ancient trunk. Yet there's nothing old-fashioned; the lines are clean and fresh. Today's elegant half apron features Dozen Roses in Cherry Cordial, a dense crush of watercolor roses with a textured lace overlay. We added jaunty oval pockets, pretty tucks and a rick rack hem. Pretty sweet style, don't you think?

Freshen Up Your Sheet Sets for the New Year with Seersucker

Friday, 04 January 2013 1:00

This pretty project originally ran during the lazy days of summer, the traditional season for seersucker. But we think the fabric's crisp, clean look is a perfect choice to freshen your bed linens for the New Year! Seersucker accents turn a plain purchased sheet set into a designer combo, and you can easily complete this project in an afternoon. For our sample, we upscaled one queen sheet set. We found our 325 thread count, 100% Organic Cotton set at Target for just $37. It looked like a $130 set from Pottery Barn when we got done with it! You can buy new as we did, or upscale an existing sheet set to give it new life... the top sheet bands and pillowcase cuffs are usually the first to fray or to look dingy. Cut them away and add something fresh and pretty.

Prairie Points Pillow in Bonnie & Camille's Marmalade

Wednesday, 26 December 2012 1:00

I did quite a bit of searching to find out where/how prairie points got their name. In doing this, I discovered quite a bit about prairie dogs, the ecosystems of Kansas prairies, and even Prairie vodka. However, the history of these cute little triangles in the world of sewing and quilting seems a bit vague. There was one posting about their possible start as a trim on undergarments in the mid-1800s. If you are a prairie point historian, leave us a comment and let us know the real scoop. While we're waiting, let's make a few prairie points to adorn a pretty pillow done in Marmalade by Bonnie & Camille for Moda Fabrics. There are 32 points around the edge; including clever mitered corners, which we show you how to make, plus three along the back as buttonhole accents. And, in case you were wondering, prairie dogs are considered to have one of the most sophisticated communication systems in the animal kingdom.
