Gingham Fruit Machine Applique Kitchen Towels: Aurifil 80wt Thread

Wednesday, 09 November 2016 1:00

It’s day three of our Aurifil 80wt designer series, and our final project highlights how wonderfully this thread performs for machine appliqué. There are lots of options for appliqué, which is essentially just adhering a feature fabric to a background or base fabric. But with machine appliqué, you need a quality thread that can both outline accurately as well as fill without obliterating the accent fabric. Aurifil 80wt performed fantastically in the outline stage, creating smooth even stitches. We then added overlapping lines of embroidery to simulate gingham. The resulting stitch work is so delicate and precise, you almost have to do a double-take to realize it’s stitching and not real gingham fabric!

Autumn Leaves Machine Cross Stitch Placemats & Napkins: Aurifil 80wt Thread

Tuesday, 08 November 2016 1:00

Cross Stitch is one of the oldest styles of embroidery. According to several historians, it dates back as far as the Tang dynasty in China (618-906 AD). It is traditionally done by hand with hundreds to thousands of tiny cross-hatches forming each finished design. In many ways, it’s really a precursor to today’s pixelated digital designs. To create cross stitch by machine, you need a thread with a matte finish to replicate the traditional antique look, and it must be super fine in order to form the multitude of tiny crosses. Aurifil 80wt thread succeeds beautifully on all levels, easily out-performing silk and producing a softer more realistically heirloom finish. We stitched our designs on a set of luxurious linen placemats and napkins.

Lion Head Machine Embroidered Mini Tote: Aurifil 80wt Thread

Monday, 07 November 2016 1:00

There is fine, and then there is Aurifil fine! Aurifil’s newest thread collection is their 80wt super fine, 100% cotton wonder. We were thrilled to be selected as one of the first to experiment with this lovely new thread, putting it through its paces outside of the world of quilting. We developed three custom embroidery designs – each presented in a unique project. Thanks to Aurifil’s sponsorship, all the designs are free for you to download in the six major machine embroidery formats. We kick-off our Aurifil 80wt series with today’s Lion Head Mini Tote, featuring a detailed machine embroidery design in the style of the popular adult coloring book illustrations.

Plaid Flannel, Double-Sided Fringed Scarves: Fabric Depot

Friday, 04 November 2016 1:00

There's power in plaid! It's a fashion staple that never goes out of style. Dress it up or dress it down - it's fabulous in every way. We used a double layer of cozy plaid flannel for our fringed scarves. It's a great alternative to wool plaids, which can be itchy to wear around your face and neck. Here's a bit of fun flannel history: it was originally made of carded wool or worsted yarn. Today, the coziness comes from cotton. 100% cotton flannel is super soft; with two layers, it's super-duper soft. We picked out our flannels from the great selection at Fabric Depot where there are enough choices to put together dozens of powerful plaid pairs.

Triangle Color Block Table Runner

Thursday, 03 November 2016 1:00

Color Block is a classic fashion trend and is just as fabulous for home décor. It has a cool 60s vibe in a bold, modern style, and no prints need apply. This is all about solid, saturated color, which makes it perfect for today's amazing large selection of solid quilting cottons. We worked with Michael Miller Fabric's Cotton Couture collection. For most of history, cotton has been a luxury fabric, something worth hauling by caravan out of the middle east and all the way to Europe. For some manufacturers, like Michael Miller, cotton is still a luxury fabric. From selecting the cotton variety to processing to dyeing, their goal isn't to make the least expensive fabric possible, but the best.

Toby the Turtle with a Hidden PJ Pocket

Tuesday, 01 November 2016 1:00

Turtles get a bad rap. They are the go-to metaphor for all things sluggish and slow. Cartoons depict them as dull-witted and sleepy. But as one of the animal kingdom's oldest species, they deserve a lot of respect. We're proud to introduce our favorite turtle, Toby. He's not only as cute as they come with his shy smile (made with darts!), he also has a job: holding his owner's PJs in a hidden pocket on his bottom shell. Thanks, Toby!

Party Favor Bags for Weddings, Holidays & More

Thursday, 27 October 2016 1:00

Back when I was attending parties in patent leather mary janes and hair bows, party favors were low-key and unassuming. If you were really lucky, you might score a candy bracelet you could eat right off your wrist. These days, things have amped up to a whole new level, with fancy favors becoming standard for birthdays, weddings, anniversaries and more. I'll admit to getting a party favor almost nicer than the gift I'd brought to the event! Maybe it's time to step back to something basic yet beautiful, starting with today's pretty favor bags in soft linen accented with gorgeous Renaissance Ribbons. Clean and simple, but with a personal touch and a fundamental elegance. What goes inside is up to you!

Our tall gift bags are lightly padded with fleece and foam to protect the bottle on its way from your kitchen to theirs.

Soft Slouch Shoulder Bag in Plaid Flannel & Denim: Fabric Depot

Monday, 24 October 2016 1:00

For yourself or as a gift, this shoulder bag is the ideal blend of two winter wardrobe staples: soft plaid flannel and crisp denim. The bag’s slight teardrop shape and soft construction gives it a signature slouch that’s as everyday-comfortable as your favorite flannel shirt and jeans. Plaid is the hot topic in fashion this season, and you’ll love the selection of Flannel Plaids at Fabric Depot. We chose the yarn-dyed Mammoth Flannel, which is woven in for an all-the-way through richness that is the perfect compliment to the stripe and solid denim. We love shopping at Fabric Depot where we can get everything in one easy stop.

Cuddly Seatbelt Pillow

Friday, 21 October 2016 1:00

In today’s world of never-ending product disclaimers (I once bought a beach ball on which one quarter of the sphere was covered with warnings of everything I should not attempt with the ball), we feel compelled to tell you that this seatbelt pillow is not for the driver. However, your passengers are allowed to doze off, and this adjustable pillow lets them do that in comfort. No more banging their heads against the window or risking a neck cramp just to get a little shut-eye on the road.
