S4H Summer School: SHARE!

Thursday, 28 June 2012 3:00

Do you remember the book that was such a hit in the 80s: All I Really Needed To Know I Learned In Kindergarten? Its theme was an uncomplicated one, explaining how the world would be a better place if, as adults, we would conduct ourselves by the simple rules we learned as children: share, be kind to one another, clean up after yourself, and remember there are times for work, play and learning. First among these rules: share. At Sew4Home Summer School, that rule rules: give a gift, do a project with a friend, teach someone to sew. You don't need a lesson plan prepared. Just start from the beginning. Then go step-by-step, having your new-to-sewing friends do the hands-on work, helping where needed, and making sure they understand each step before you go to the next. We've collected eight Project Pairs to Share that are perfect ways to get started.

S4H Summer School: SHOP!

Wednesday, 27 June 2012 3:00

Today in S4H Summer School, we're learning about shopping. Now, I know most of you already have mad shopping skills, but we're taking on a topic that has generated some controversy in recent years: buying sewing supplies - especially fabric - online. How on earth can you experience such a tactile item as fabric digitally? Don't you have to see the rich colors, feel the texture, match the designs to one another with your own two eyes?! Well... you are reading this online at a website where we acquire about 75% of our fabric from digital swatches. Both virtual and hands-on shopping fill important niches. We believe browsing at and buying from your favorite local stores is a wonderful sensory and social opportunity, but we also love the in-your-jammies convenience and selection of shopping online.

S4H Summer School: SEW!

Tuesday, 26 June 2012 3:00

It's hands-on day today in S4H Summer School. Time to sew! But first... we want to take a moment to say, "Thanks!" Every day, from 10,000 upwards to 14,000 visitors stop by Sew4Home. Not only is there a solid group of returning friends, we're excited to also have an almost equal number of new people who discover us each day. Sew4Home fans are simply the best on the web! It makes all the hard work worth it when we read your enthusiastic comments or hear about how we've inspired another "sewing newbie" to turn on her/his sewing machine. On days like today, when we feature a collection of classic projects, it's like a proud mom bringing out favorite photos of her kids. It's our way show off some great tutorials you might have missed the first time around, or, if you're one of those new to the site, to bring to your attention articles you haven't yet had time to unearth. When we create these collections, we keep in mind of number of things: original popularity, variety within our theme, how long it's been since its debut, and the ability of the project to grow beyond its original use. Today, we've have Eight Great Summer Sizzlers we know you'll love.

S4H Summer School: LEARN!

Monday, 25 June 2012 3:00

I used to put myself in the "old-dog-no-new-tricks" category, until I realized how much fun it is to open your mind to new experiences. Even when you've had a job or hobby for years and years (and years), there's always something interesting to find out about. I now proudly consider myself in the "new-puppy-lots-to-learn" category, and I'm tail-waggin' excited to share it all with YOU! In honor of the lazy, days of summer, we have a special series this week called S4H Summer School. Over the next few days, we'll Learn, Sew, Shop, Share and Win. You get a virtual doggie treat for every new idea you pick up. Before you grumble about learnin' while the sun shines, did you know summer vacation hasn't been around forever? Our modern summer break didn't take hold until the early 20th century. In the decades before the Civil War, rural students went to school only during summer and winter terms, leaving spring open for planting and fall available for harvesting. In the cities, urban kids studied as much as 48 weeks a year. Of course, education wasn't compulsory back then, so some surveys estimate as few as 30% of enrolled students actually attended year-round. S4H Summer School isn't compulsory either... but it is fun.
