Clothing isn't really our bailiwick, but that doesn't mean we completely shy away from it. In fact, we're especially keen on fashionable little wearables, like aprons, accessories and such. We also don't shy away from using crazy cool words, like bailiwick. For your next round of Balderdash™, this means your "particular area of interest" or "your jurisdiction" should you happen to be a bailiff. Now, that you have your word of your day, we'll bring you our Top Three Wearables of 2013.
As many of you know, we keep an official You Asked 4 It list. These are the projects you'd like to see in 2014 and beyond, and "more wearables" is definitely one of the top requests. So, one of our New Year's resolutions is to find new ways to expand this category. Until then, check out the winning ways of these three from 2013.
Heart & Ruffle Apron in Tangier Ikat
This runaway favorite is one of our newest aprons, posting just this past October. It boasts a full compliment of all-out "girly-girl" accents: a heart-shaped bib, pretty ruffles rimming the edges, darts and pleats. All that in the perfect color combo of candy pink and orange sherbet from the Tangier Ikat collection by Dena Designs for FreeSpirit Fabrics. This is such a fun, flirty apron, we knew it would end up in the Top 13. The Damask style design we chose has a classic Ikat treatment where the edges appear to bleed into the background as if done with brush strokes. This ornate, wallpaper type motif is a perfect palette for fussy-cutting. The bib is a match to the skirt right through the waistband, and the pocket blends into the skirt with only a ruffled top to give it away.
FreeSpirit/Rowan 10&10 Series: Long Ruffled Scarves in Valori Wells/Novella Rayon
We love to design accessories, and you love to make them! They're a fast, economical way to jump start your wardrobe. Throw on a belt, wrap up in a scarf, add a fabric flower pin... suddenly, it's a whole new look and feel. We did a number of beautiful scarves this year, but one stood out thanks to its extra long and stylish design. The winning feature was an elastic channel through the middle of the entire length that allows the lightweight rayon to ruche up into a fun, ruffly shape secured at each end with a pretty little bow. We made two scarves, each one in two coordinating rayons. You can wear them separately or together.
Janome Week: The "Everything" Apron: Embroidery, Decorative Stitching and Quilting
This Spring, we took you through a week of projects that showcased some of our favorite Janome machines, such as the Horizon Memory Craft 8900 QCP and the Memory Craft 9900. Today's apron combined all the techniques we experimented with during the week and pulled them together into one, fun project. Our Everything Apron must have been everything you wanted, because it easily landed in our Top 13 of 2013. Its unique style features colorful embroidery on the lower bib, pockets and hem; bold decorative stitching on the waistband, neck ties and waist ties; and pretty straight line quilting on the upper bib. Our mantra is traditionally, "less is more," but this design shows that with the right balance, you can layer on embellishments for a beautiful result.
