Know How Much Fabric to Buy

Printer-friendly versionSend by emailPDF version

Click to Read MoreIf your project instructions call for two yards of 60-inch wide fabric, but the fabric you want to use is 45 inches wide... attempting to dredge up that old math lesson in proportions is probably not going to happen on the fly. Instead, print out this handy conversion chart for those times you don't have a pattern envelope with a yardage conversion table.

Remember, this is an estimate. If your fabric has a large-scale pattern or is one-directional, it's best to buy extra.

@ Celeste Khosraavanlou - you have not stated the WITH of the fabric, which could be 20", 45", 54" and up to 60+". There are 36" in a yard so if you have 4-1/2 yards, you have 162" in length. The width is another matter.

I need to buy about 20 yards  if I were to buy a 44-45 width fabric.  What would this equate to if I bought a fabric that was 60 wide?  Thanks!

@ Bug - Unfortunately, I don't have the underlying formulas used to create these conversions shown in the chart above. So I don't have a 100% accurate way to go beyond the 5 yards shown. This chart was a distillation of many charts availabe onine. I'd hate to rely solely on my math skills and then not give you the correct amount. You may be better off relying on the advice of your fabric retailer.

@ star -- find the 2 yards square in the 50" column, then go to the left in that row to the 45" column - you should get at least 2-1/4 yards of a 45" fabric.

The chart is designed to show you how much to buy based on the fabrics width. Many of our projects list yardage for a 44-45" wide fabric, but say you picked out a fabric to use that is 60" wide. If we called for 2 1/2 yards of 44-45", you just follow the row that shows the 2-1/2" under the 44-45" column over to the 60" column, and now you see that you only need to buy 1-7/8 yard of the 60" fabric. Hope that helps.

How exactly do you read this chart? Would you look under the column of 44-45in. Then under 60in where is says 2 yards? Would the answer be 2 3/4 yards?
