If your project instructions call for two yards of 60-inch wide fabric, but the fabric you want to use is 45 inches wide... attempting to dredge up that old math lesson in proportions is probably not going to happen on the fly. Instead, print out this handy conversion chart for those times you don't have a pattern envelope with a yardage conversion table.
Remember, this is an estimate. If your fabric has a large-scale pattern or is one-directional, it's best to buy extra.

Know How Much Fabric to Buy

i bought 4 1/2 yards of fabric is tha equivalent to 60 inches ? I NEED TO KNOW ASAP!
@ Celeste Khosraavanlou - you have not stated the WITH of the fabric, which could be 20", 45", 54" and up to 60+". There are 36" in a yard so if you have 4-1/2 yards, you have 162" in length. The width is another matter.
I need to buy about 20 yards if I were to buy a 44-45 width fabric. What would this equate to if I bought a fabric that was 60 wide? Thanks!
@ Bug - Unfortunately, I don't have the underlying formulas used to create these conversions shown in the chart above. So I don't have a 100% accurate way to go beyond the 5 yards shown. This chart was a distillation of many charts availabe onine. I'd hate to rely solely on my math skills and then not give you the correct amount. You may be better off relying on the advice of your fabric retailer.
12 yds. 4x 27/8 if the chart is correct.
I have a quilt top that is 67 x 73. How do I figure how much fabric I need. say 44 inches wide????
@ Linda Lou - how much fabric for what? Backing? Binding? If it's binding, our reacent bias binding article will be just what you need:
