Book Review, Free Project & Giveaway: Precut Patchwork Party by Elaine Schmidt

Printer-friendly versionSend by emailPDF version

THIS GREAT GIVEAWAY CLOSED 03/01/13. THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO ENTERED.

Think precuts are only for quilting? Think again! In her new book for Creative Publishing International, creative dynamo, Elaine Schmidt shows how you can make home décor projects, wearables, accessories, gifts and more... all using precuts. Precut Patchwork Party starts with the basics of the shapes and sizes available, the best tools and supplies, and general techniques. Then, it rolls right in to 18 inspired projects. Today, Elaine and her publisher have allowed Sew4Home to feature one of those projects as a free download! Plus, they've provided a copy of the book for us to giveaway.

We first met Elaine Schmidt through her book, The Complete Photo Guide To Ribbon Crafts. It was, hands-down, the best book on working with ribbons we'd ever seen. You can find our original review here, and the book is still widely available, including through Amazon.

Based on her combination of inventiveness and expertise, we knew this new book would be a must-have as well. The comprehensive getting started section is fantastic just on its own. We especially loved all the techniques; Elaine's process always shows us an easy way to get a great result. Take a peek at her rolled rosette made from a jelly roll strip.

The variety of project options is very nice. You can make a trendy yoga mat bag from jelly roll strips cut into small squares and patchworked together. Elaine has good notes on balancing color and pattern.

Or, how about a set of soft blocks and a snuggly blanket that mix charm squares and super soft Minky?

The project we chose, and which Elaine and her publisher so graciously agreed to let us feature for free, is the Tisket Tasket Fabric Basket. This woven wonder is made from just 10 jelly roll strips. What a great way to showcase ten different patterns from within one colorful collection.

The project is provided as a downloadable .pdf file. Click the image below to download. You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is a free program. Be aware this PDF file is 2.8MB, so please be patient with the download process.

Since this sample project will only whet your appetite for more, check out your favorite retailer for your own copy of Precut Patchwork Party: Modern Projects to Sew and Craft with Fabric Strips, Squares and Fat Quarters. And, of course, enter for your chance to win a copy. Want another chance to win a copy of Precut Patchwork Party and see a tutorial for how to make that rolled rosette fabric flower? Visit the publisher's fun blog, Craftside!

I like to go fabric shopping with my good friend.  We both love fabric and it's fun to look at  all the pretty fabrics together.

Sewing doesn't have to be on a sewing machine!  My friends and I would meet up and sew our little projects while catching up with each other and trading tips and tricks to help make whatever project we're doing better.

We once came together to make charity baby quilts.  Using all our scraps and remnants, I helped stitch together a nifty 36x54 baby quilt to donate.

I sew with my daughter and we have made several projects from Sew 4 Home.  I also attend a quilters retreat day 2-3 times per year.

Some of the best times that I have sewing are when I sew with others.   I take advantage of classes that are offered at my LQS and really enjoy the company of the other women as we sew.

I'm lucky to have several sewy friends here in town, so we try to get together for a sewing get-together every month or so - we always have big plans on getting things done, then spend most of the time carrying on and laughing instead of actual sewing, lol.  I love my sew-ins!

I loved to watch my Grandmother sew, she was my inspiration. I enjoy sewing and monograming for my customers but it is also my therapy. I enjoy taking classes once in awhile to learn a new technique. I belong to a sewing and applique forum. I have liked you on FB and I follow your boards on Pinterest

I am so excited about Elaine's new book! I loved her ribbon book and have used it so much it is quite dog eared! I started sewing in middle school on my Grandmothers 1963 Singer. I love going to classes at my local quilt shop and hanging out with my buddies. My sister has also recently revived her love of sewing and we can't wait for all the fun we are going to have together! I use the precuts all the time, not only for quilting but for clothes, hair bows, home projects and bags, just to name a few. They are so coordinated and easy to use they make every project turn out fabulous! Thank you so much for this opportunity to win a copy of the book. Happy projects everyone!!!

I taught myself to sew in 5th grade, and since then, with the help of family and friends I have collected fabric and learned techniques. I am a senior in highschool now, and I do not regret learning to sew at all! I have made dresses and gifts, as well as run a small home business. I love fabric, sewing, and your website!

I made my first sewing project when I was 5, it was an apron for my mom. No pattern, no idea what I was doing, all I can say is the finished product looked like an apron (with a ridiculously small waist needed, no edge finishing on the ties and the hem changed up to 1/2" from one side to the other. Since then I have progressed, and am still learning. I take projects everywhere I go. You just never know when you will have some down time (flat tire?) and/or you need something to keep your hands busy, while visiting with friends and family. I have projects that are "visiting", "traveling", "TV time", "music", and "concentration needed". I'm in the process of trying to teach my granddaughter sewing, on the same machine I learned on. You have to encourage the passion of creativity at all times.

I've been sewing most of my life and just recently began to quilt.  I've made a whole new world of friends via two quilt guilds and I have a special group of quilt buddies that I sew with weekly.  We've laughed and cried together over the past year.  Next step is teaching a tote bag class in a new shop....hoping to make many new friends in this endeavor too!

I've been sewing for more than fifty years and I don't think I have one friend that sews!  I'm thinking I may start teaching.  There seems to be so many younger gals looking to sew these days. Good to see it happening!

Thank you for the opportunity to win this great book! I love to sew gifts for family and friends.

Im often asked to show them how i made it so i organise a sewing morning to create with them. With small children its hard to get time to go to organised groups but i find at home easier for everyone!

I am part of a sewing group. I learned sewing in school and sew together with my mum who loves sewing too. She has sewn for me many dresses since I was a toddler and now she sews for my kids. I own Stitch Bugs and love sewing pencil cases for kids to most of my son's friends. I've never used precuts before and would love to win this package to try them out with my mum. She has a keen interest in quilting and wants to teach me. She will be 80 next year so I am very proud of the fact that at her age, she still sews. Thanks so much Sew4Home for the opportunity!

I started sewing with my Mother and sisters. II no longer have that privelege due to MOther passing and I have lived apart form them for several years but we share ideas andgifts! My daughters have a slight interest as they have grown older. I do socialize with a group at church called the "sewing Sisters" every Thursday. We each bring a project,or help someone learn a new craft, sewing, knitting or what ever and make projects for mission projects. We have even helped a novice seamstress to learn her machine!!I also try to introduce some to the children in our after school group.

I try to get away a few times a year with my quilting friend Leah,  we stay at a remote location, visit local fabric stores and usually pick a quick and easy project we can do together in a weekend.  There is nothing like uninterrupted time with fabric!!!  Lots of happy memories made.

I''m brand new to sewing. My first project wil be the fabric wallets posted a few days ago.  A new fabric store opened up locally and I've already started gathering fabrics. While there, I signed up for a beginner's class!  I'm very excited!  I work FT weekends only and this will be my first girls-day-out in a few years.  Yea for mommy time!

I don't mix socializing with sewing. Sewing requires my total concentration or I make too many oops. Sewing is for my personal satisfaction. On the other hand, I do enjoy watching people's reactions when they learn I sewed something they like.

I find I actually get more sewing done when I'm with my friends. I belong to several quilting groups plus a guild. As a matter of fact, I just came back from a retreat full of sewing, eating & talking and still managed to finish two quilt tops. I do get lots of ideas from the internet - way too many to ever finish - but it hasn't stopped me yet.

I'm one of those people that can't walk and chew gum at the same time, so socializing while sewing is out of the question. It's bad enough the cat demands my attention everytime I'm at my cutting board or sewing machine.

How can you not mix the two?  They are a natural combinations.  I love to sew with my friends.  We belong to our local guild, take classes, attend retreats, block of the month clubs, and my favorite is when we get together at my house once a month for a Saturday full of sewing and friends.  I would be lost in quilting with out my friends!!

Mixing : I add yearly membership to our local quilt guild & this year I sit on their board as Property Manager. Years prior I have been Frienship Block committee chair and committee chair for our annual District Fair; acting as coodinator for Quilts Judging and set up/take down.  There's alot of socializing withing the Guild and I have made many dear friends because we have common interests: Sewing & Quilting & Philanthropic Work ♥

I really don't combine sewing and socializing because none of my friends or family members sew.  Any socializing I do only happens if I take a class.  It's okay - sewing is for my own personal pleasure!  Thanks for the chance.  I'm enjoying all of the inspiration on your site!

I'm a facebook fan and follow you on Twitter and Pinterest.

The only quilting I do is social as I'm just a newbie.  I attend Quilt Socials at my local Joann's.  It's $10 for 2 hours and I work on my project with an instructor available to help me along.  I also sew/quilt at a local church who has a ladies ministry called "Pinistry" and ladies come bringing whatever craft they're working on to come together kid free and for good fellowship.
