To be an artisan has many meanings across a variety of professions, but at its core, it is the desire to create a distinct handmade item with skill and creativity. Our friends at FreeSpirit Fabrics have a wonderful opportunity for you to showcase your inner artisan by making a quilt for the I Am An Artisan Challenge, featuring the stunning Artisan fabric collection by Kaffe Fassett. Win up to $4,700 in prizes, including a brand new Janome Skyline S9 sewing and embroidery machine!

If you’re looking for bold color and design, you’d be hard-pressed to find anything more dramatic than the fabrics by Kaffe Fassett. His latest collection for FreeSpirit Fabrics is Artisan, which debuted late last year. It more than lives up to his colorful reputation. Artisan is an eclectic mixture that borrows from the traditional stripes of hand-woven Indian textiles as well as the mod splashes of abstract art we associate with sixties-era fashion. Kaffe is a master at blending, and he understands that opposites can indeed attract. He’s combined an explosion of pattern into this cohesive collection that includes painterly prints, ikat, batik, and more.

With its handcrafted elegance, Artisan is the perfect backbone for the I Am An Artisan Challenge. Your challenge is to create a 60” x 60” quilt, roughly 80% of which should feature the new Artisan fabric. This juried and judged quilt competition is sponsored by FreeSpirit Fabrics with entries being accepted now through June 2, 2017.

Our recent Artisan Throw project isn’t an official entry, but is certainly inspiration for your own creation. The stated focus of the competition is: “quilts designed to showcase the harmony of color and texture. Each quilt will speak to a time when hand creation included dedication, appreciation, skill and love of the craft.”

There is an incredible array of prizes, including Janome sewing machines, a Sizzix diecutter and dies, batting and more from The Warm Company, as well as generous one-yard cuts of Artisan fabric.

For full entry rules and details as well as a complete listing of all the amazing prizes, visit the I Am An Artisan website. The competition is open to artists in the United States and Canada.

Kaffe Fassett himself will be part of the jury selecting the works. Plus, the winning quilts will be on special display at both the 2017 Quilt Market and Quilt Festival in Houston, Texas.

Are you an artisan? We believe you are!
