Get Ready 4 Fall: 3 Book Reviews - 3 Giveaways

Printer-friendly versionSend by emailPDF version

THIS GIVEAWAY ENDED 09/12/2012. THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO ENTERED.

Fall means it's time to get back to the books, and that's a very good thing in Sew4Home land. Today, we give you at peek at three new books we've found and enjoyed: Zakka Style compiled by Rashida Coleman-Hale, Quilts from The House of Tula Pink by (ah....yeah) Tula Pink, and Stop. Go. Quilt. Sew! by Angela Yosten. But the story doesn't end there, because we have an extra copy of each book to give away to three lucky Sew4Home visitors.

Zakka Style

  • 24 Projects Stitched with Ease to Give, Use & Enjoy
  • Compiled by Rashida Coleman-Hale
  • $15.95, 127 pages from Stash Books, a division of C&T Publishing
  • Find Zakka Style at Amazon

Rashida Coleman-Hale hit our radar in the Spring of last year, when her beautiful inaugural fabric collection came out for Timeless Treasures. We were interested to find out more about her take on zakka style and see the designers she brought together to showcase.

Zakka is a Japanese term that, loosely translated, means "many things" or "miscellaneous goods." Rashida, who spent much of her youth in Japan, was always intrigued by the Japanese zakka aesthetic. To her, it means more than its literal translation. It is the embodiment of simple charm and uniqueness. Zakka sytle is the creation of something that is innovative, useful, and just plain lovely to look at.

This book contains 24 eclectic projects by Rashida's favorite zakka inspired artists from around the world. We were particular enamored by the Stem Messenger Bag by Larissa Holland, and the Happy Couple Hand Warmers by Holly Keller, as well as Melody Miller's Patchwork Ribbon and Rachel Roxburgh's Bread Basket.

QUILTS from THE HOUSE of TULA PINK

Sew4Home has been a fan of Tula Pink for years. There has been something amazing to fall in love with in all ten of her fabric collections: a debutante's up-do that morphs into a sailing pirate ship, an enchanted princely frog, a garden filled with birds and bees. We were thrilled to take a look into this new book, and peek inside her always creative world.

Tula's studio, aka Pinkerville, is chock-a-block with what she calls, "color-coded piles of nonsense." But there's method behind that madness, and this book lays out twelve techniques and tales plus ten gorgeous quilts and ten accessory projects. There's a lot of inspiration between these covers.

The book starts out with the how-to's and why-not's. We thought her tips on fussy cutting and piecing were especially clear and clever. And we were particularly fascinated by her articles on the design process; Tula demystifies color blending and gives you a look at how she brings a design from paper sketch to fabric reality.

The quilts are wonderful. We particularly liked Dreamweaver. And the non-quilt projects are especially unique, like a Peek-a-boo Shower Curtain, a Cuckoo Clock, a Connect The Dots Lampshade, and a super sweet Lollipops Pillow with 36 covered buttons.

Stop. Go. Quilt. Sew!

  • Make 12 Fun Projects for Boys to Enjoy
  • By Angela Yosten
  • $22.95, 110 pages from Stash Books, a division of C&T Publishing
  • Find Stop. Go. Quilt. Sew! at Amazon

It's one of the most common questions (perhaps "pleas" is a better word) we hear about sewing projects, "Why aren't there more projects for boys?!" Our friend, Angela Yosten has come to the rescue with a new book that has 12 great projects, each with a personalized traffic sign/signal theme.

The unifying element among the projects is Angela's clever scrap appliqué technique. She describes it as a way to, "create texture and depth with simple cottons." Rather than using one fabric from which to cut your appliqué, Angela shows you how to piece together your favorite scraps first, then use this "created fabric" as more colorful and interesting appliqués.

Angela has included all her appliqué templates in the book as well as numerous patterns. There are also great step-by-step photos and, of course, we were happy to see she used her Janome sewing machine and serger!

You'll find garments ideas, such as a Roo Crossing Hoodie; décor ideas, such as the adorable One Way Growth Chart (always up!); and accessory ideas, such as the cool Do Not Enter Messenger Bag.

It's easy to enter to win one of these three amazing books

What an amazing giveaway!  I do appreciate your reviews of books from time to time, and found these especially  interesting.  I am more apt to buy a book if I have read a review and see how much use I might get from said book.  Thanks for these helpful reviews!

I have seen the first two books at my local library, both are way cool. Nicely published (quality paper and photos) and had lots of wonderful projects with clear directions. The third book looks equally interesting, I don't think anyone else needs to win them but me! ;) Thanks for such a great give-away!
