Michael Miller Cotton Couture: Great Giveaway

Printer-friendly versionSend by emailPDF version

THIS CONTEST ENDED 07/10/12. THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO ENTERED.

It's been a colorful two weeks here at Sew4Home, as we put Michael Miller's 100% Cotton Couture collection through its paces: color selection - check, beautiful drape - check, silky feel - check, coordination with MMF prints - check. With the quality points in order, now it's time to share the rainbow. With Cotton Couture, that rainbow is red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet... plus 83 more! You could win THREE specially-selected fat quarter bundles of Cotton Couture: 20 jewels, 20 pastels and 20 neutrals plus a Color Card - an over $200 retail value!

The good folks of Michael Miller Fabrics have provided THREE fat quarter boxes; each contains twenty 18" x 21" cuts. There's one in Jewel tones, another in Pastels, and the third is Neutrals. In addition, you'll get a Cotton Couture color card with real fabric swatches. Sixty generous slices of rich color for home décor, garments or quilting.

One lucky Sew4Home fan will get all three fat quarter bundles plus the swatch card to rev up her (or his) own color riot. For your chance to be that lucky winner, simply take a few minutes to browse through the 90 Cotton Couture colors, then leave us a short comment about your favorite color and why.

How better cotton fabric is made

Luxury cotton makers, like Michael Miller begin by choosing their raw materials the way a chef chooses his ingredients. This means selecting from varieties like American Pima or Egyptian cotton (which has several subvarieties), then from these varieties, buying only the better quality fibers.

During initial processing, the shorter cotton fibers are combed out, leaving only the longer fibers, which produce finer thread. These longer threads can be woven at a higher thread count. This is the basis of that luxurious feel we love.

After the thread is woven into fabric, but before it's dyed, it will be gassed, specially prewashed, and mercerized (which allows the fabric to stay soft and loose when washed).

The dyeing process is where a lot of cheap cottons get that stiff, rough feel. Regular dyes simply 'paint' the outside of the cotton fibers, making them stiff. The darker the cheap dye, the stiffer the fabric. Luxury cottons are given their color with 'reactive dyes.' Instead of just coating the surface of the fiber, these dyes actually permeate through to the core. The result is color that is deeper, more vivid, and longer lasting. It also means the darker colors are just as soft as the lighter colors and even the whites.

The most luxurious cottons are the solid colors. Because the process of making cotton prints is a lot like printing wrapping paper (the fabric is run through a printing press), it can never match the softness and colorfastness of reactive dyeing.

Finally, after dyeing, luxury cotton is further treated by calendaring (a process using heated rollers) and Sanforization (a process that fixes the fabric so it resists shrinking). Now it can be cut to size and delivered to your local candy shop (sometimes called a fabric store).

We encourage you to give these great Cotton Couture solids from Michael Miller a try, because high end cottons don't just look wonderful. They wear longer, wash longer, and feel better. Once you've worked with them, you'll never go back to anything less.

I love:  Berry

It is one (of several) colors I just ordered from the Fat Quarter Shop in order to make the Michael Miller Three-Tier Ombre Apron.  Really excited about making this apron!  My comment to myself added to the pattern instructions stored locally on my PC:  "This apron is very special.  If I make just one apron in my whole life, please let it be this one!"

Fog is my favorite - unpretentious and supportive.  Like the wonderful friend who makes all those around her seem smarter and funnier... and better.  That is what Fog is to me.  Thanks for the chance to win such a wonderful prize pack!

This collection is awesome! It looks like they've made it pretty easy to come up with some great color combinations! If I had to pick one favorite color, it would have to be SC5333_Luna. It's a cool aqua shade and reminds me of Caribbean waters and is a calm, soothing color!

Wow. I didn't realize such color drenched solids are available. I have never used any of these high end cottons in projects as my husband thinks creativity shouldn't cost a lot. (but i still love him) I would choose Starfruit if I could only have one.

Apple was wonderfully bright, and I would so enjoy to combine it with raspberry :)  It's funny, I'm generally a subdued personality, but these beautifully vibrant colors speak to me!

I absolutely LOVE the shades of Clementine and Tangerine, but I would choose Tangerine if I had to pick only one.  There are so many gorgeous colors that it is very difficult to decide, but I would be making something for the fall and those colors are so lovely and warm.  Thanks for the chance to win a prize.
