Home sweet Sew4Home. When we began our site, our primary focus was to give you inspiring projects to make your home a more beautiful and comfortable place to be. Today, although we often branch out into gifts, wearables and more; we always come back to the soft furnishings you love to make for your own home as well as to share with others. Today's Top 13 of 2013 category is Top Décor. We narrowed this group down to just two, which was almost as hard as picking our favorite holiday pie. In the end, your votes online and in Social Media made the difference.
The Top Décor winners included one storage solution and one pillow. There was also a Miss Congeniality Award, which went to 2013's favorite How-To course: our Four-Part Seam Finishes Series.
FreeSpirit-Rowan 10&10 Series: Fabric Box-Baskets in Jenean Morrison/In My Room
As a functional container or just a pretty table accent, a fabric basket is always a winner. So, we were not surprised when this "box-basket" trio made the most-popular list. Their construction is similar to previous baskets we've done, but we changed the shape, height, and base to give them more of the feel of a box. The fabric, with its playful little patterns and nostalgic colors, is the sixties and seventies inspired, In My Room by Jenean Morrison for FreeSpirit Fabric. Two of the baskets feature solid side panels and the third is done with patchworked strips. We used a heavy canvas strapping for the easy-to-grab side handle loops and a neutral solid in a home décor weight for each base. This unifying base fabric ties all three together so they work as a group. At 8" square and 10" tall, they're a great storage solution.
Learn To Sew: Xtra EZ Nine-Patch Pillow
One of our largest categories of projects is Pillows & Cushions. From giant lounging softees to tiny ring bearer pillows, we have something in almost every shape, size and skill level. But, we still are often asked for more projects that can be done by beginners or used as projects to help teach someone to sew - especially a child. Our Xtra EZ series was developed to answer these requests, and today's pillow fave was one of those learn-to-sew projects. It hit on all cylinders: fast, easy and fun in an adorable fabric collection: Love & Joy by Dena Designs for FreeSpirit Fabrics. We chose the red and aqua colorway, which is a can't miss combo in everyone's book. Then we showed you all the tools and tricks to create a simple patchwork design as well as the most basic of pillow closures: the overlapped envelope back.
