Very, Very Valentine-y: Pick A Project to ❤

Thursday, 31 January 2013 1:00

We picked a dozen of our favorite Valentine projects... even better than a dozen red roses, we thought! There are the four projects we recently completed in the new Kissing Booth collection by BasicGrey for Moda Fabrics, plus eight more classics we simply love to love. Beyond the new Kissing Booth collection, some of the other featured fabrics may no longer be available. But not to worry; we bring you the latest and greatest fabrics nearly every day here on Sew4Home! In fact, the current 10 Designers & 10 Collections series for FreeSpirit and Rowan has many wonderful choices that are in-stores now.

Top 12 Tools for Pillow Projects

Tuesday, 29 January 2013 1:00

We get quite a few compliments on our samples and photography, which makes us blush and makes our day! Some of the most common notes are about how "smooth," "straight" or "perfect" things look, along with a request to know, "What are your secrets?". We're firm believers in surrounding yourself with the top tools to get the job done. Having the right tools on hand makes all the difference in how easy a project is to complete, as well as how good it looks when finished! We've found that spending a little bit more up-front can more than pay for itself in the long run. You save both time and money when the project turns out right the first time, plus there's no hair-pulling, no swearing, no hurling things out the window (all reactions we've been guilty of when a tool has failed us). Because we have three pretty pillows this week as part of our 10 Designers & 10 Collections series for FreeSpirit and Rowan Fabrics, we collected our fave tools for pillow making. Read up - gather 'em up - and make a prettier pillow.

A Guide to Successfully Printing and Assembling PDF Patterns

Thursday, 24 January 2013 1:00

Technology can be a wonderful thing. The ability to have immediate access to a free sewing pattern is one of those wonderful things... unless you run into trouble with printing. We've answered countless emails from users who have fairly simple issues – an old version of Adobe Reader, or failure to set Page Scaling properly. We can't solve every issue, but this guide summarizes how to print our PDF patterns, as well as how to assemble patterns that require more than one page.

Machine Sewn Seam Finishes – Hong Kong & Bound Seam - Part 4 of 4

Tuesday, 22 January 2013 1:00

We've made it to the finish of our seam finishes! In this final installment of the series, we venture into the world of the Hong Kong Finish and the Bound Seam finish. If you're not a 'finishing aficionado' (don't feel bad... few people claim that title), you may have been under the impression these techniques are one in the same. Both involve wrapping the raw edges of a seam allowance with a bias cut strip of lightweight fabric. When finished, they can look almost the same. However, the two options differ slightly, and today's tutorial will show you how.

Machine Sewn Seam Finishes - Mock French Seam & French Wrapped Seam - Part 3 of 4

Tuesday, 15 January 2013 1:00

We are not yet finished with our series of finishes! If you've been following along, you know we are working through the ways to make the inside of your projects look as great as the outside. Today, we're moving into a couple more unique options: the mock (or false) French seam and the French wrapped seam. The mock French seam uses a standard straight stitch, the French wrapped seam the straight stitch in combination with a zig zag stitch. These are basic stitches you'll find on any sewing machine, which means there’s no reason not to incorporate them into your seam finishes toolbox.

Happy New Year!

Tuesday, 01 January 2013 1:00

Proving anyone can (and should) make their own home décor (and lots of other cool stuff) is our goal here at Sew4Home. If we've helped you catch the sewing bug - or inspired you with our projects and articles, then your New Year's task is simple: pass on your skill. Find two or three friends or relations who would benefit from knowing how to sew. If you're reading this, and you've never even sat down to turn on a sewing machine.... guess what? Every single one of us who sews – even the most expert seamstress – was once where you are today. Nobody is born knowing how to sew. (If you hear about a newborn making his or her own receiving blanket, please let us know.) Fortunately, there are really only two steps: 1) a desire to do it, and 2) doing it.
