Staying active, fit, and flexible is a top goal across all age groups. Consistency is key for building exercise habits and seeing results, but staying motivated can be tough, especially if you’ve been inactive for a period of time. We think surrounding yourself with cute and clever gear can help keep things on track, starting with this great Yoga Mat Shoulder Sling Bag, an exclusive pattern in our S4H Etsy Shop.

We use gorgeous ribbon embellishment on the body and strap of our Sling, combining that with tough PUL fabric (Polyurethane Laminate). It’s a substrate that’s easy to sew and there’s no raveling at the raw edges, making finishing details a snap.

Look for a heavier-weight PUL, not the super thin kind often used for diaper covers. Another option would be a cotton laminate or even a thin vinyl. The idea to is use something with some water-resistant characteristics to accommodate a damp mat. For our original samples, we used a thick and soft, bright pink PUL as well as a classic heavy and crisp PUL in a unique lavender.

The accent ribbons come from the amazing Jacquard selection at Renaissance Ribbons. Substantial, colorful, and with the most vibrant designs you can find anywhere, Renaissance is our ribbon go-to every time.

A double-drawstring design lets you slide your mat in or out from either end. And there’s a handy zippered outside pocket for extra necessities so you don’t have to carry another bag or wallet if you’re heading for class or an outdoor workout on a sunny day. Travel light!

This project is very beginner friendly. The majority of the construction process is done with flat layers, even the pocket. If you’re new to the PUL substrate, we have a good step-by-step technique tutorial on working with it as well as cotton laminates, oilcloth, and other sticky stuff.

The Yoga Mat Shoulder Sling Bag finishes at approximately 28 long x 6 in diameter (when cinched closed at each end), and is designed for a standard 24” wide x 5 diameter exercise mat.

As an ePattern, our Yoga Mat Shoulder Sling Bag includes instructions and photos to take you through each step of the construction, including how to create that very cool zippered front pocket. At S4H, we believe in “no fear zippers.”

If you’re a S4H regular, you know virtually all our site content is free. But keeping a small business alive and growing is challenging, and our little Etsy Shop gives us an opportunity to explore some other revenue options to help off-set the ever rising costs of creating our popular projects. We appreciate your support and confidence.

The full Yoga Mat Shoulder Sling Bag pattern is just $5.50, which is a fraction of the cost of most independent and commercial patterns.

There are two PDF files included in this $5.50 pattern purchase. As a digital download, we understand you are providing the paper and ink and so have included flexible printing alternatives. The first file contains all the steps plus all the full color instructional photos; it’s a great option for viewing on your computer or other digital device to fully understand the construction process. The second file is condensed to black and white with just the steps (no photos) to make printing even more efficient. Both files can be printed on either US Letter paper or A4 paper, using Adobe Acrobat Reader (a free program). No fabric or supplies are included.
